Celebrating the 7th Cohort of the Public Health Advocacy Fellowship

On May 3rd, we gathered to celebrate the closing session of the 7th cohort of the Advocates for Better Health Public Health Advocacy Fellowship. This year’s fellows included medical students, dental students, and a Master of Health Administration candidate, each bringing a unique perspective to the work of health advocacy.

During the closing session, fellows reflected on how their understanding of advocacy had evolved. While some entered expecting to write op-eds or meet with legislators, they found themselves doing that and much more—amplifying the voices of impacted communities, building coalitions, and creatively adapting to a shifting political landscape.

Cohort members shared how their advocacy took unexpected but meaningful forms with many noting a newfound confidence in using their platform, skills, and privileges to advance health equity. Importantly, they came to understand that advocacy isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach; it can be quiet or bold, systemic or interpersonal, but always grounded in listening and justice.
