Last weekend, we gathered to celebrate the closing session of the 7th cohort of the Advocates for Better Health Public Health Advocacy Fellowship. This year’s fellows included medical students, dental students, and a Master of Health Administration candidate, each bringing a unique perspective to the work of health advocacy.

Advocates for Better Health (ABH) is proud to support the launch of the Public Health Community Institute (PHCI)—a dynamic new program led by the Minneapolis Health Department.

On April 12th, ABH fellows, mentors, board members and staff enjoyed The Art of Medicine: Lines We Hold, Lines We Cross event together.

Last week, the ABH team had the opportunity to attend and co-present with NorthPoint Health and Wellness at the Minnesota Department of Health’s Commercial Tobacco Prevention and Control Conference in St. Paul, MN.

ABH is a proud member of the Metro Food Justice Network (MFJN). Last week, we gathered at the RedLeaf Center for Family Healing to explore the "food as medicine" concept and discuss how to apply it across Minnesota's metro area.

This legislative session, ABH staff and Public Health Advocacy Fellowship students have been actively meeting with their elected officials to advocate for the issues that matter most to them.

We are thrilled to announce that Alyson Rodway, MPH was elected to the Board of Directors of ABH in March! Alyson brings a wealth of experience in healthcare coordination, project management, and public health advocacy, making her an invaluable addition to our leadership team. 

Going into this work, I expected to do meaningful, community-led work. The lessons learned and connections made still caught me off guard in the how they've transformed me.

The ABH Public Health Advocacy Fellows recently had the privilege of engaging in a powerful conversation about community organizing and its role in driving change.

We are thrilled to welcome Aman Damer, RN to the ABH Board in February! Aman brings a deep passion for community well-being, a wealth of experience in public health, and a strong commitment to advancing health equity. 

In February, ABH welcomed Rachel Stoll, a passionate community health worker from Rushford, MN, to the position of ABH Board President. We thanked Dr. Etienne Djevi for his leadership as 2024-25 President and celebrated our Board Officers: Vice President Naheed Murad, MD, Treasurer Gerilyn Hausback, CPA, and Secretary Katie Frie, DNP, APNP.

ABH worked to bring forward two key voices to the Senate Education and Finance Committee educational hearing on the Free School Meals program: Dr. Diana Cutts, a pediatrician and Chair of Pediatrics at Hennepin Healthcare, and Rachel Stoll, a community health worker and ABH Board President.

Improving the lives and care of sickle cell warriors is a critical piece of the fight for reproductive justice.
