An Evening with Ricardo Levins Morales

At ABH, we love creating spaces for health professionals to connect and grow. Recently, we gathered at the Open Book Performance Hall for a special evening with artist and activist Ricardo Levins Morales, whose work has inspired us for years. Ricardo’s concept of "cultural soil" being more important than the seeds has shaped the ethos of ABH’s Public Health Advocacy Fellowship since its inception.

Over a delicious meal, attendees—including ABH fellows, alumni, and healthcare professionals—explored Ricardo’s art and the invaluable lessons he has gained over decades as an organizer, artist, and activist. His reflections highlighted the importance of nurturing not just individuals but the systems that support them, as well as a call to “be a wetland” absorbing excess nutrients, filtering toxins, and passing on water that is cleaner and safer to those downstream.

We’re deeply grateful to Ricardo for sharing his wisdom and to everyone who joined us for this memorable evening. Together, we’ll continue to cultivate the soil needed for justice and equity.

Ricardo recently published his first book, The Land Knows the Way. His book launch will be on February 6th at Moon Palace Books. More information here.
