ABH | The Foundation was honored to present the 2025 Charles Bolles Bolles-Rogers Award to Dr. Eduardo Colón in recognition of his tremendous contributions to clinical practice, medical education, and psychiatric leadership in Minnesota.

Dr. Eduardo Colón’s Legacy: Mentor, Educator, Advocate

Over four decades at Hennepin Healthcare and the University of Minnesota, Dr. Colón has been a transformative force in psychiatry. A nationally respected expert in consultation-liaison psychiatry, he has authored more than 20 peer-reviewed publications and multiple book chapters, deepening understanding of the psychiatric dimensions of medical illness, the mental health needs of Hispanic and Latino communities, and the connection between diabetes and depression. His scholarship and clinical insight have strengthened interdisciplinary care, shaped curriculum, and raised standards across the state.

Dr. Colón is equally distinguished for his mentorship and commitment to equity. He has supported generations of physicians, psychologists, and advanced-practice providers with a rare blend of rigor, compassion, and humility. His leadership—as Chair of Psychiatry at Hennepin Healthcare and through service on diversity committees, workforce-development initiatives, and community education programs—demonstrates a steadfast dedication to expanding opportunity and improving care for underserved communities. His impact lives on in the clinicians he has guided, the systems he helped build, and the patients whose lives reflect the quality of his work.

As his colleague Dr. Laura Van Cleve shared on the nomination form, “Dr. Eduardo Colón exemplifies the highest standards of our profession.”

Congratulations and thank you, Dr. Colón!

About the Charles Bolles Bolles-Rogers Award

Established in 1951 by the late Charles Bolles Bolles-Rogers, the Charles Bolles Bolles-Rogers Award (originally the St. Barnabas Bowl) honors physicians who have made outstanding contributions to medical research, achievement, or leadership. Mr. Bolles-Rogers, who served as President of the St. Barnabas Hospital Board of Trustees, ensured that this award would be funded in perpetuity.

The award itself is a handcrafted bowl created by local artist Tanya Garvis. Tanya uses color glass, dusted and fired in multiple rounds to create a unique design. Each piece is carefully shaped, and even the “mistakes” are considered beautiful, reflecting the individuality and artistry of each award.

Each year, Twin Cities hospitals and clinics are invited to nominate a physician whose contributions have significantly impacted their field. The recipient is chosen by the ABH | The Foundation selection committee based on their remarkable professional achievements over the years.
